Martens Steps Away from Football After 17 Seasons
The Hague, Netherlands - Dutch women's football icon and Paris Saint-Germain forward Lieke Martens announced her retirement from the sport on Tuesday. The 30-year-old, who has been a key figure in the Oranje Lionesses' rise to prominence, has decided to hang up her boots after 17 seasons at the highest level.
Martens' career began at the tender age of five with RKVV Montagnards, and she quickly progressed through the ranks. She made her international debut in 2011 and has since amassed an impressive record with the Netherlands, winning the 2017 UEFA Women's Championship and finishing as runner-up in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
At club level, Martens enjoyed great success with Swedish giants FC Rosengård, where she won three consecutive Damallsvenskan titles from 2013 to 2015. She then moved to Barcelona in 2015 and was part of the team that won the UEFA Women's Champions League in 2021. In 2022, she joined Paris Saint-Germain, where she continued to shine both domestically and internationally.
